Essay on Marx and Ideology
In Marx’s theory of ideology there is the materialistic interpretation of history, or "historical materialism," which is important because it introduces the idea of inevitability and imparts that air of finality which distinguishes Marx from all other writers. This view of history simply reduces to the proposition that cause, not purpose, rules men's behavior, 24 which means that they act as they do because they are earthlings in a world that keeps them tied down to its own physical laws; given their animal and physical nature and requirements, they cannot do otherwise than obey the law of the natural environment of which they are a part.
Any economic argument involving modern capitalism in imperialistic expansion obviously must say something regarding foreign trade and finance....................
