Essay on At a Summer Hotel by Isabella Gardner
Isabella Stewart Gardner was born in Massachusetts. During her lifetime, she acted, edited Poetry magazine (1952-1956), taught, published four volumes of poems, and gave frequent poetry readings. She declared herself "a poet who is woman first and poet second." Two years before her death, she published much of her poetry in Isabella Gardner: The Collected Poems.
Isabella Gardner wrote the poem in West of Childhood: Poems 1950-1965 (Houghton Mifflin Co.) and the main speaker of the poem is the mother who is speaking about her beautiful, joyful and generous child.
The main theme behind the whole poem is that the mother is accompanied by her beautiful child and explaining the fun and joy her child will experience with the pacifying sea. This poem as written specially corresponds to the relation between a mother and her womanful child and how the mother can so well understand feelings and emotions of her girl child responding to what will soothe her, what is important for her and what will not bewilder her.
