Essay on Use of Focused Instruction in Poetry
Introduction
Teaching poetry is an essential part of the attempts to develop young students to improve their reading, writing and communication skills. Different children learn in different ways and attempts towards focused instructions to teach poetry can assist in children appreciating and developing their ability to understand and express themselves. Research in child education suggests that the brain is a pattern detector which is constantly looking for patterns and attempting to relate these patterns to unfamiliar patterns and words. Poetry helps students to recognize words and associate these words with meaning easily and efficiently.
The study of poetry provides students with the opportunity to relate words, the usage of words and meanings in order to achieve a better understanding of language. Hence, there is a need to create an immersive environment for teaching poetry in which students learn not just by reading, but also by listening, illustrating, attempting to present their own compositions, writing and discussing. Hence, there is a need to place a greater emphasis on poetry and teaching poetry because attempts towards the teaching of poetry have taken a back seat in many institutions. Young children should be helped to write from the hearts, access true emotion instead of surface feelings and be exposed to the hidden meanings as well as the excitements of expression that is hidden in poetry (Michael, 2002).
It is, therefore important to examine if the focused instruction of poetry assists in a student’s development of writing, reading and critical thinking skills. An examination of this thesis was undertaken by examining various perspectives, results and opinions in published literature and scholarly papers (Bill, 2000) and (Heard, 1998).
