Essay on History of Neuropsychology

Abstract

This paper will discuss History of Neuropsychology. Developmental neuropsychology deals primarily with the struggle to acquire function whereas adult neuropsychology deals primarily with loss of previously acquired function. thus, it discussess the developmental neuropsychological perspective draws upon cognitive psychology and neuropsychology but does not represent the traditional views of either of these disciplines. It also draws on theories of brain organization that recognize principles of hierarchical organization with cross-talk within and across levels within the hierarchy and of hierarchical organization with crosstalk between hierarchies.

Introduction

Neuropsychology is a field that attempts to relate what is known about the functioning of the brain to what is understood about human behavior and development. Developmental neuropsychology is a relatively young discipline, which has become established, at least in the United States, in response to the federal mandate in 1975 to identify all handicapped children for the purpose of providing them with an appropriate education (Obrzut & Hynd, 1986). In contrast, adult neuropsychology is more established; it emerged at the end of the nineteenth century and was firmly established as a discipline in the decade following World War II to treat veterans whose nervous systems had been injured in the war.

Developmental neuropsychology deals primarily with the struggle to acquire function, whereas adult neuropsychology deals primarily with loss of previously acquired function. There has been considerable controversy over whether knowledge of brain-behavior mechanisms gleaned from studies of loss of function can be generalized to principles of acquiring function. A reasonable resolution of this controversy is that developmental neuropsychologists should be knowledgeable about research in adult neuropsychology because there are probably some parallels between brain mechanisms in developing and mature organisms. However, they should also recognize that unique brain processes may be involved in learning a skill that are not involved in losing a skill, and that the brain changes across development (Arnsten A, Robbins T. 2002).................
