Abstract

Introduction

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness characterized by persistent defects in the perception or expression of reality. A person experiencing untreated schizophrenia typically demonstrates grossly disorganized thinking, and may also experience delusions or auditory hallucinations. Although the illness primarily affects cognition, it can also contribute to chronic problems with behavior or emotions.

Social model of mental health

The social model is meant to imply more than just the practical issues that may impact on a person’s life such as benefits and housing. Historically the social work perspective has offered a holistic approach to mental health practice. Contexts – social, political and cultural – are central to the understanding of mental health problems. (1993)

The modern social model is based on an understanding of complexity of human health and well-being, emphasizes the interaction of social factors with those of biology and microbiology in the construction of health and disease, addresses the inner and the outer worlds of individuals, groups and communities, understands and works collaboratively within the institutions of civil society to promote and protect the interests of individuals and communities and is committed to the development of theory and practice and to the critical evaluation of process and outcome. The Social Model has a number of important implications:

It is person-centered, not system-centered: we need to look through the "lens" of each individual at the range of resources he or she needs, not just to treat mental illness, but to recover and maintain an optimal level of mental health.

It is participatory: the model shows who needs to be part of the team involved in planning and making decisions, particularly the person-in-the-centre and informal caregivers....................
