In the years of the Cold War on-duty manpower was cut around, from 2.1 million to 1.4 million. Furthermore, there was a shift with respect to national security of the country. Due to these factors there has been an increased need for much longer and repeated deployments, particularly for soldiers in the Army and the Marine Corps. These deployments in the combat zones have proofed to be challenging for on-duty service members and their families.
The soldiers particularly in the areas of severe wars such as Iraq and Afghanistan are faced with psychological challenges. Some of these soldiers and their families show considerable resilience in handling these challenges. Moreover the government provides adequate defense manpower policies to help soldiers and their families to cope with combat stress. (Hoge et al., 2004)
Many scholars have also given arguments and explanations from various perspectives of economics, field of sociology, and perspectives of psychology. These scholars present formal models of deployment and of retention.

When soldiers, both men and ever more women, are deployed to combat areas, it always is a questions that whether they will come back or not. Some of them, however, do not come, while some soldiers return back as physically injured, while others return home without damages but with very harmful injuries, like psychological problem. Therefore, a military operation without any physical casualties is impossible to achieve, similarly, a military operation without psychiatric casualties is hard to achieve as well.
