Essay on History of Organizational Psychology and theories of motivation

We currently are in transition to a new paradigm that has enormous implications for every science. Like previous discoveries, it comes with accumulated evidence that is sufficient to force a rejection of long-standing beliefs. Chaos theory, also called nonlinear systems theory, has been rapidly gathering substance and support for the past twenty years. It has evolved beyond development and has now found practical applications. It has already found applications in the fields of hydrodynamics, meteorology, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and cardiology, displacing old beliefs with new ones. It is now time for chaos theory to change the way we think about organizations and how we manage them. (Yahya Sadowski, 1998).

A new theory may not seem as profound as the discovery that Earth is not the center of the universe, but remember that at one time, Copernicus had only a heliocentric theory. Also note that Copernicus' discovery affected primarily astrophysics; it didn't force wholesale revision of virtually every science. Chaos theory is profoundly important stuff.

Chaos theory is pervasively important because it attacks fundamental beliefs that we hold about our world and puts them in question. Specifically, it suggests that nothing in this world is random, and that all the disorder and apparent unpredictability about us are natural products of entirely deterministic processes. Consider the implications. Sales forecasts may not need to be forecasts at all; they may be values that are entirely knowable. Major environmental disruptions to a business may not be unpredictable. Disorder that results from a merger or an acquisition may be understandable in advance. Most important, if nothing in this world is random, then why do we use statistical methods that discard as error so much valuable information about our businesses? (Bud A. McClure, 1998).

If you own, manage, or work for any organization, you may already be affected by changes related to chaos theory.....................
