Erik Erikson (1902-1994) maintained that children grow in a predetermined order. Instead of focusing on cognitive development, nonetheless, he was concerned with how children socialize and how this affects their sense of self. Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development has eight distinct stage, each with two possible outcomes. According to the theory, victorious conclusion of each stage outcomes in a healthy personality and flourishing interactions with others. Failure to successfully complete a stage can result in a reduced ability to complete additional stages and consequently a more unhealthy personality and sense of self.
These stages, however, can be resolved successfully at a later time. A girl who has been sexually molested by her father can suffer from eating disorders, weight changes, pregnancy, prostitution, delinquency, running away, substance abuse, suicide attempts and hysteroid symptoms in response to sexual abuse. Trust vs. Mistrust. From ages birth to one year, children begin to learn the capability to have faith in others based upon the reliability of their caregiver(s). If faith develops effectively, the child gains self-confidence and safety in the world around him and is capable of feeling protected even when endangered. Ineffective conclusion of this stage incase of the girl who has been sexually abused by her father can result in an inability to trust, and therefore a sense of fear about the inconsistent world. A parent is the first person a child grows up around and learns to trust and love from him/her and when a person’s trust is betrayed by that very same person it usually result in nervousness, heightened insecurities, and an over feeling of distrust in the world around them.( Dacey, J. and M.
