Essay on Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
The Myers-Briggs Type Instrument (MBTI) is a psychological test that measures personality types and preferences. Until relatively recently, use of the MBTI in government has been limited. Persons administering the MBTI are required to be certified by the Center for Psychological Type; a prerequisite of this certification is having had a course in psychometric testing and measurements. Thus, use of the MBTI was mostly limited to larger governmental agencies that had trainers or those who could afford consultants. Despite its wide use as a tool to enhance leadership development, the current way in which the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is administered provides limited value to managers. The MBTI consists of four attitudes or orientations Extraversion-Introversion and Judging- Perceiving and four functions Sensing-Intuition and Thinking-Feeling. The E-I dichotomy deals with where people focus their attention; the S-N dichotomy deals with how people prefer to take in information; the T-F dichotomy deals with how people make decisions; and the J-P dichotomy deals with how people deal with the outer world.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was developed by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs. They developed the instrument after studying Carl Jung's Psychological Types. The instrument simplifies his theories and enables people to assess their preferences with regard to judging and perceiving. Results on the MBTI can be used to help people understand their reactions to situations, their relationships with other people, and their career interests. The MBTI measures preferences on four dichotomous scales: extroversion-introversion (E-I); sensing-intuition (S-N); thinking-feeling (T-F); and judging-perceiving (J-P). Peoples' results on the MBTI are expressed as a four letter combination which represents one of sixteen possible types. The sixteen types suggest differences in peoples' preferences but do not suggest that people of any type are better or worse than people of other types. (Carlyn, M. (1977).
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is by far the most widely used and studied psychological test today.................
