Essay on Violence after playing Violent Video Games
The dramatic escalation of violence committed by and against people is shocking (Eron et al., 1994). Although according to Federal Bureau of Investigation, the murder rate in the year 1998 dropped almost 8 percent in comparison of the murder rate of 1997. Similarly crime rate of crimes like rape and assault had been decreased up to 5 percent each and crime rates of robbery and burglary fell by 11 percent and 7 percent respectively (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1999) but still the violence among the youth has increased sharply.
There is no simple explanation for the presence of aggression, nor is there any obvious, easy way to reduce it. The fundamental basis of violence is absolutely clear: the human capacity for aggression.
Is Aggression learned?
According to Rogers, “Learning itself is the task. What formalized learning does is to make learning more conscious in order to enhance it” (Rogers, 2003; P. 27). He further suggested that different ways of learning might appear in the same context.
Aggressive behavior is strongly affected by learning. Rewards obtained by aggression today increase its use tomorrow. Such rewards come in two flavors:
- Positive Reinforcement: when desired outcome are obtained
- Negative Reinforcement: when undesirable outcomes are prevented or stopped
Based on this approach Albert Bandura presented psychological social learning theory. It emphasizes that we learn from the example of others as well as from direct experience with rewards and punishments. Models influence the pro-social, helpful behavior. They also affect antisocial, aggressive behavior. Research has amply demonstrated that a wide range of aggressive models can elicit a wide range of aggressive imitation.
