Erik Erickson was a student of the Freud’s.  He worked with Sigmund Freud in Austria. Later than his adviser died, he sustained with Sigmund's daughter Anna Freud.  Like others along with Freud's supporters, Erickson at first felt that his individual theory was just an explanation of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic presumption.  Ultimately, still, he strong-willed he disagreed with too many of Freud's key points.  He felt Freud was correct in noting that people go through exact stages in raising their personalities, but he came to believe that Freud had overemphasized the role that sexual development plays and that Freud had ignored adult personality development.

The development of identity seems to have been one of his greatest concerns in Erickson’s own life as well as in his theory. During his childhood, and his early adulthood, he was Erik Homberger, and his parents kept the details of his birth a clandestine. So here he was, a tall, fair-haired, blue-eyed boy who was also Jewish. At temple school, the kids teased him for being Nordic; at grammar school, they teased him for being Jewish. Later than graduating high school, Erik paid attention on becoming an artist. When not taking art classes, he wanders about Europe, visiting museums and sleeping under bridges.
