Essay on Effects of domestic violence on children
Introduction: Children witnessing domestic violence is a major national concern. Family violence seriously threatens the stability of families and the health and emotional well-being of children (National Research Council, 1993). Scientific efforts to gain an understanding of how family violence affects children have included investigations of (1) the nature of family violence, (2) the extent to which children are victimized, and (3) how these traumatic events adversely affect child development. The research literature on domestic violence and children has predominantly focused on children who are the direct victims of physical abuse. Only in the last decade have researchers addressed the plight of the indirect victims of family violence, the children who witness their mothers being physically abused by a partner. (Graham-Bermann, S.A., & Levendosky, A.A. (1998))
Body: Over the past three decades the intense focus on child physical abuse has resulted in laws, mandatory reporting, statewide definitions, and local investigation procedures to respond to the needs of direct child victims. To guide treatment and prevention efforts for direct victims, we now have national prevalence studies and a body of research literature on the specific nature of the traumatic events, developmental consequences of maltreatment, and the etiology of maltreatment. Unfortunately, the research knowledge base on children who witness maternal abuse falls far short of our knowledge base on children who are the direct victims of domestic violence.( Martin, S.G. (2002))
To make definitive statements regarding the child witnessing phenomenon based on the child witnessing research literature available at this point would be a risky endeavor. There are many gaps and inadequacies in this research area that necessitate a serious scientific research agenda. Today, we have no clear definitions, no systematic ways of substantiating accounts of witnessing, and no national prevalence studies. What we do have is a collection of studies indicating ill effects associated with unsubstantiated reports of violence.......................
