Essay on Violent Video Games Do Effect Aggressive Behavior of children
At the turn of the 21st Century, violence is the most prevalent health risk for children and adolescents. Homicide, suicide and accidents are the top three causes of death for those 15 -24 years-old. Each year over 150,000 adolescents are arrested for violent crimes, more than 300,000 are seriously assaulted, and 3,500 are murdered. Violence done to and by America's young people is a public health emergency, an emergency that must be addressed by all of us, physicians, parents, children, and policymakers.
Entertainment media affect our lives. The way we think, feel, and act is at least to some extent influenced by what we see and hear in the media. As far as TV is concerned, we have studied and learned in detail what kind of program may have which kind of effect on various groups of viewers.
Of utmost importance were the effects on aggressive behavior, particularly with regard to children and adolescents who are considered to be more vulnerable. Computer games, however, may be even more intense than TV ever was, simply because video games are not only observed or witnessed by an audience, as TV programs or movies are, but actively used. i.e., in playing computer games, children and adolescents are not (more or less passive) viewers anymore, but act as virtual participants in an often violent social setting.
Users may also identify with an aggressive character more than TV viewers usually tend to do. The users themselves may even take on a part in the game, with their own personalities, their expectations, preferences, fears or desires, simply by taking on a role provided by the game. A role, however, that is free of real life sanctions for conduct and can therefore be played with apparent disregard to consequences.
Research on exposure to television and movie violence suggests that playing violent video games will increase aggressive behavior......................
