Essay on School Violence Prevention: Teaching Peace in a Time of War
INTRODUCTION
Through out America, school violence is increasingly becoming more than just the game of a bully on the playground. It is increasing to great magnitude and this dilemma must be dealt with by a collective effort of all the members of the society.
School violence basically begins with the bully on the playground, or it may start out with simple pushing and shoving in the lunch line. However, if the right sets of circumstances are provided, something, which can be prevented with adequate supervision, instead turns into a deadly dilemma. Therefore it is of vital importance that the problem of school violence should be adequately addressed.
BACKGROUND AND STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Describing school violence and delinquency is by no means an easy task. A massive number of aspects are present that all are part of the cause in order to fully understand what factors and reasons are behind as to what motivates children to engage in delinquent behaviors. Although, scholars have presented a great deal of arguments suggesting that various biological and psychological factors are at play in determining the reasons for delinquent behavior in school. Juvenile delinquency, in recent times is a substantial and an increasing problem in American society.
In previous periods, many of the juvenile offenders caught of doing any illegal act were simply put into jails along with adult offenders. Most of the juvenile offenders were subjected to long prison terms and were also given corporal punishment for their offences. Moreover, in some instances, many juvenile offenders were also sentenced to death for committing certain crimes.
These trends have however, changed and many reformers, apprehensive regarding the severe treatment of these juvenile offender urged and appealed to government and various establishments that there should be a separate system for these juvenile delinquents and schools should undertake intervention programs to deal with gangs and school violence................
