Abraham Maslow Harold was an American psychologist and foremost promoter of humanistic psychology. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and educated at the City College of New York and the University of Wisconsin, Maslow spent most of his teaching career at Brandeis University. Judging orthodox behaviorism and psychotherapy to be too severely hypothetical and apprehensive with sickness, he developed a theory of motivation unfolding the process by which an person progresses from fundamental needs such as food and sexual characteristics to the uppermost needs of what he called self-actualization the accomplishment of one's greatest human prospective. Humanistic therapy, more often than not in the form of group therapy, seeks to help the individual progress through these stages.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a speculation that psychologists, sociologists and educators, among others, use in their professions to understand how a person chooses to act. The theory is based on the hypothesis that all people have the craving to exploit their latent and strive to do what they are skilled of doing. The theory presumes that subsequent to individuals meet the needs in four lower categories; they begin to meet the needs in a higher fifth kind. In this highest category, people try to meet their need of excelling at something, which can include choosing to act differently.

It can be diagramed using a triangle with five different levels inside it, with each level representing its own category of needs. Starting from the bottom, the categories are bodily/physical needs, safety needs, and social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. A person meets bodily needs first and then progresses up the triangle, meeting the needs of each respective category before moving up to a higher one. According to Maslow, people will not jump or miss out categories; they will progress systematically up the triangle....................
