This paper takes a look the work of Sigmund Freud, the famous psychologist and psychoanalyst on the interpretation of dreams. Dreams consist of the nocturnal images that seem to arise from a source other then the ordinary conscious mind during sleep and can be wholly or vaguely remembered on awakening. Sigmund Freud considered the interpretation of dreams to be the road to the unconscious mind and his theories on dreams have stood the test of time for seventy five years. Freud published “Screen Memories: The Interpretation of Dreams”, “On Dreams” and “Dream and Hysteria” as part of his effort to understand dreams.

Introduction

Dreams are the nocturnal images that arise from a source other then the ordinary consciousness during human sleep and can be either completely or partially remembered on awakening. These nocturnal images have always fascinated mankind since time immemorial and there are many historical records of this fascination and attempts to analyze dreams. The Bible tells of the fall of King Nebuchadnezzar, which was revealed as the fall of a great statue of several metals by Daniel. The parents of Jesus, Joseph and Mary were warned of the danger to child Jesus by a dream. In more recent history, Joan of Arch predicted her death through one of her dreams (Find Your Fate.Com, 2004).

Whereas many explanations for dreams and dreaming have been offered over time, Sigmund Freud, the famous psychologist and psychoanalyst who had such a profound impact on the development of psychology and psychoanalysis, was very interested in studying dreams and produced several publications as a result of his research on the subject. Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, in Moravia, on 6th of May 1856 and studied at the Vienna University. He was interested in medicine and psychology and in relation to the study of dreams..................
