Essay on Christian Ethics Concerning Abortion

For the Christian, human life is a sacred continuous "Process" from conception, through pregnancy, birth, growth to adulthood and on to natural (or accidental) death. To deliberately destroy an innocent human being at any point after conception is, in God’s eyes, a wrongful killing (the biblical exception covering justified killings are strictly limited). Therefore "discarding" spare embryos, terminating a pregnancy by dismembering or poisoning or prematurely inducing the delivery of a fetus, starving the new born handicapped or deformed child to death (or giving a lethal dose of a powerful drug to end the earthly life of an elderly or incurably diseased person) are all prohibited by the teaching of the Bible. They are all acts which intentionally destroy innocent human life, and such acts are forbidden by the sixth commandment. Christians therefore oppose abortion, embryo disposal, infanticide (and euthanasia) (Hunnex, 51).

The Bible and Abortion
Human Beings are special - they alone are made in God’s image. Genesis describes how God Himself created men and women "in His Own Image". He also planned how they should act as His deputies on earth, looking after it and everything on it. The value that God sets on human life was demonstrated again when Jesus Christ was born; by becoming a man, God showed the infinite value He has for us (John 1:14). As His "deputies" we are not to overrule God’s sovereignty at the beginning (or end) of life. We are told that matters of birth and death are to be left to God (Job, Hebrews 9:27, Matthew 10:29-31). We all depend totally on God for our existence (Acts 17:28).

Where life begins - what the Bible says. The Bible talks about people personally before they are born (Psalms 51:5, 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:4, Galatians 1:15). The Bible very specifically emphasises that the Incarnation began at the miraculous conception of Jesus within the virgin Mary (Matthew 1:18-21, Luke 1: 30-35)............
