Binge drinking is a prevalent phenomenon on most college campuses, a dilemma that not only intervene with the mission of higher education but also carries with it grim danger of disease, injury, and death.
From one generation to the next, we have seemingly continued this ridiculous practice of "binge drinking". Why is it that today's generation feels that this is fun? Risking your life to fit in isn't fun. Fun is going to an amusement park or even a baseball game. Unfortunately, college campuses across the nation are preoccupied by this issue of alcohol abuse. Binge drinking in the U.S. is out of control and mostly a problem that our government has produced (Magdalena, 2001). It is a byproduct of legal age limits for drinking. Therefore, putting an age limit on drinking privileges is definitely something that needs to be reevaluated.
One of the most serious problems in today's youth is drinking. Binge drinking can cause serious injury and many college and high school kids are dying from it. Binge drinking is identified as the number one health hazard for American college students today. For men binge is defined as having five or more drinks in a row. For women, binge is defined as having four or more drinks in a row (Magdalena, 2001). A drink can be considered as a twelve-ounce bottle or can of beer, a twelve-ounce bottle or can of wine cooler, a four-ounce glass of wine, and a shot of liquor (either straight or in a mixed drink).
A 140 college nationwide study consistently reported that 86-95 percent of students drink alcohol, but 50 percent of men and 37 percent of women binge drink (Henry, 2003). On average, most college students consume about fifteen or more drinks a week......
