Overview
Dr. Heinrich Hoffman first described Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in 1845. He said it is a condition, which becomes prominent when the child is in preschool or early school years. It is being said that nearly 3 to 5% of children suffers from ADHD. In general ADHD is estimated to be 3 or 4 times common in boys. For some there is remission at puberty but for others the condition, if untreated, continues to blight their adult life and currently according to an estimate almost 2 million children in USA suffers from this problem meaning that in a classroom of 25 to 30 children, it is likely that at least one will have ADHD.
The direct results of the problem of ADHD are that the children starts acting without thinking, in hyperactive manner, and have trouble focusing. They may understand what is expected of them but have trouble following through because they cannot sit still, pay attention, or attend to details, unable to concentrate, and has poor school performance compared with intelligence. Along with this their behavior at home and at school is also troublesome. A child who is suffering with ADHD faces a difficult situation but still nothing is impossible and life does move ahead. In order to achieve his or her full potential, he or she should receive help, guidance, and understanding from parents, guidance counselors, and the public education system.
