Introduction
Hodgkin’s disease also called Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, the network of glands and channels that occurs throughout the body. Doctor Thomas Hodgkin first explained this disease in 1832 [What Is Hodgkin’s Disease]. This cancer initiates in lymphatic tissues that include lymph nodes and associated organs of the body’s immune and blood forming system. The lymphatic system also includes spleen, bone marrow and thymus. The lymph nodes are small organs located below the skin in the neck, under arm and groin. The nodes are also found in the chest, abdomen and pelvis [Hodgkin’s Disease]. Lymph nodes create and store white cells named lymphocytes, in the blood that fight and resist infection. These cells are interconnected in the body through lymph vessels. These vessels carry transparent watery liquid called lymphatic fluid that contains lymphocytes [Hodgkin’s Disease]. Lymphatic fluid is eventually poured in to blood vessels. The spleen is located in the left side of the upper abdomen that is mainly composed of lymphocytes and eliminates old cells and other unwanted particles from the blood [Hodgkin’s Disease]. The bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside the bones that produces red and white blood cells including lymphocytes. The thymus is small organ in the chest that is vital in developing a special lymphocyte called T cell.
The Disease
Hodgkin’s disease can start where lymph nodes are present. Generally it starts in upper parts of the body. This disease enlarges the lymphatic tissues and causes pressure on other parts of the body. It spreads to other lymph nodes through lymphatic vessels. In case it enters into the blood the same can spread in whole body very quickly. The cell in lymphatic system become abnormal and starts getting divided rapidly and grows without any control. Tumors in the lymphatic tissues are called lymphomas..........
