ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. ADHD used to be known as attention deficit disorder, or ADD. In 1994, it was renamed ADHD. The term ADD is still used, though, to explain a type of ADHD that doesn't entail hyperactivity. It is a medical state that affects how well someone can sit still, spotlight, and pay attention. People with ADHD have differences in the parts of their brains that control attention and activity. This means that they may have trouble focusing on certain tasks and subjects, or they may seem "wired," act spontaneously, and get into trouble. Patients of ADD tend to be docile, obedient, shy, overly polite and under-assertive. They make lasting bonds, test low and have an understanding of boundaries.

ADHD patients, conversely, express quite the opposite in terms of personality traits. They are apt to be mutinous, disturbing, self-centered, bossy and physically high-strung. They make few lasting friendships, speak without regard and are unaware of boundaries. People with ADD/ADHD tend to have high energy, are straightforwardly distracted from ideas, emotions and thoughts, are continually agitated, procrastinate, are easily frustrated, may lack social grace, tend to show poor performance in school especially in reading and retaining concepts. These symptoms, nevertheless, can vary in degrees from patient to patient. Although ADHD begins in childhood, sometimes it's not diagnosed until a person is a teen and occasionally not even until someone reaches adulthood. (Desdemona Bandini (2005)
