Some of the youngest volcanic terrain found anywhere in the Cascade Range are in the McKenzie Pass (5324 ft. high) area of west-central Oregon. The Belknap Crater Complex, a broad shield five miles in diameter and about 1,700 feet thick, was formed by fields of lava vents that erupted profusely about 1500 years ago.One exception is Little Belknap, which erupted about about 3000 years ago. When Little Belknap was formed, lava poured twelve miles to the west and ash was ejected from the northernmost of the two summit craters. Little Belknap was the origin of the immense lava fields in the foreground. The main bulk of Belknap ash, which has been traced over an area exceeding 100 square miles, was ejected earlier from a larger south crater. Still earlier lavas were basaltic and moved eastward 7 miles from their vents. The final eruptions from the northeast base of Belknap Crater sent lavas 15 kilometers westward into the valley of the McKenzie River..........
