Essay on The Cardiovascular System

There are two categories of studies on the effects of age on the cardiac functioning. One set is focused on examining the structures of the heart and blood vessels. These studies are performed on autopsy cases, and so by necessity are exclusively cross-sectional. The other category of studies is directed at understanding how age affects the functional performance of the heart and circulatory system. These studies are conducted on people who are usually asked to carry out strenuous activities while their cardiovascular functioning is monitored. There are both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies within this category. In addition, there is an enormous body of literature on how short- and long-term participation in aerobic exercise training can slow the effects of the aging process on a variety of key variables related to the dynamic functions of the cardiovascular system.

In addition to concern over the effects of normal aging, there is tremendous social interest in finding out how cardiovascular diseases can be prevented by educating people to carry out certain health practices. Heart disease is the most frequent cause of death in middle-aged and older persons. The most significant cardiovascular disorders include atherosclerosis (narrowing and rigidification of the arteries), cerebral vascular accidents ("strokes"), and acute myocardial infarctions ("heart attacks"). The research on exercise training is often conducted on patients undergoing therapy for an infarction to determine whether damage to the heart can be reversed at all and future such incidents can be averted. Another major category of research on prevention of heart disease is that concerning daily habits of diet, smoking, and alcohol use and the extent to which they are related to illness prevalence rates.
