Essay on Avian Flu- A Multidisciplinary Approach
Introduction
Avian influenza is a type of viral infection that causes many types of birds to fall sick and therefore become unfit for human consumption. Several types of this influenza exist, most of them influencing domestic and sometimes wild birds, though this virus is thankfully not very easily transferred from animals and birds to humans. Wild birds however usually do not develop clinical diseases. This virus, dubbed as H5N1 influenza was first spotted during the times of ‘Spanish Flu’ in 1918 which also originated from avian flu. During 2004-2005 it started spreading from Asian birds and has now taken the form of a pandemic that has spread across many countries that inhabit these birds due to seasonal migration or for human consumption. The virus from Asian birds got transferred to a few people, but fortunately has not spread from person to person. This virus has caused serious infection in people in the past therefore a generic concern about its spread is found among public and environmental health authorities; the major being its ability to change characteristic since it could evolve and travel from person to person (Avian Flu Fact Sheet).
In early November 2005, more than 60 those expired due to Avian flu infections, in the South East region of Asia particularly Vietnam. Some have picked up the flu simply by visiting sick birds in zoo or markets. It is thought that the cause of infection has been powdered form of bird droppings in the atmosphere. The most important question at the moment is if the flu will develop to permit for easy human-to-human transmission. Apart from bird-to-human transmission as mentioned already some cases in Indonesia hint a transmission of the disease from humans to humans, if not smooth...........
