Bipolar disorder, also commonly called as the bipolar illness or the manic-depressive illness. It is primarily a treatable neurobiological brain disorder differentiate by the acute fluctuations in mood and variations in activity level. Moreover, it is generally believed that bipolar disorder occurs among at least 1-2 percent of the adolescent and adult population. However, the bipolar spectrum disorders like the mild cycling and recurrent depression, are believed to develop in 5-7 percent of the population of adults and adolescents. Moreover, it can develop at any time of life, either from the early childhood days to later parts of life.

According to the Child & Adolescent Bipolar Foundation, it is estimated that as many as one million or even more children under the ages of 18 years in the U.S. may develop bipolar disorder. This bipolar disorder usually gets undiagnosed and untreated in these children. These children who have bipolar disorder are likely to be at risk for school failure, or from substance abuse, and even from suicide. Bipolar children as young as age 3 years may start talking of wanting to kill themselves.

In the activated state of bipolar disorder, of Mania, some symptoms may include insomnia, hyperactivity, daredevil acts, elation and grandiose thinking. Some of the other symptoms include, racing thoughts, separation anxiety and intense temper tantrums, which can also be referred to as “rages” or “affective storms”. All these symptoms may occur during the depression or mania state in these children. Often times symptoms of both the states can happen together in a mixed states, like depressed mood with high energy; or they might occur in rapid succession within a single day, also known as the rapid cycling.

Whereas in case of adults the bipolar disorder is more often than not characterized by isolated periods of intense euphoria followed by experience of acute depression.................
