Essay on Exploring the Physics of Ultrasound Technology and it's usage in Medical Diagnosis

Ultrasound technology utilizes a system that measures the speed and distance traveled by high-frequency sound waves and their echoes to create an image. Low-powered, high-frequency sound waves are pulsed into the body by a probe, and are reflected back by the tissue they encounter. The reflected sound waves are registered by the probe and sent to the ultrasound machine which calculates their speed and distance, and uses this information to form an image of the encountered tissue. As millions of sound waves are transmitted and received each second, real-time images are produced instantaneously.( A Ishigaki S, Shimamoto K, Satake H)

The standard ultrasound systems used today consist of the same basic components. First is the transducer probe, which transmits and receives the sound waves. It is placed against the patients skin over the area of interest, or can be inserted into an incision and placed directly against an organ or vessel. The probe is connected to a computer-based central processing unit (CPU) that supplies power to the transducer, and converts the ultrasound data into an image. A display monitor displays the image calculated and processed by the CPU. The systems also include a printer and disk storage capabilities for storing and printing displayed data, transducer pulse controls that change an adjust the amplitude, frequency and duration of the sound waves, and a keypad and/or cursor system that allows for image measurements and data management. Since its inception as a diagnostic tool, ultrasound technology has continued to develop in the medical field. When most people think of ultrasound their first thought is usually a hazy black and white baby picture in a wedge on a computer screen...................
