Essay on Orthopedic Nursing

The attitudes and knowledge of orthopedic physical therapists regarding chronic benign pain (not related to cancer) was assessed by a questionnaire, which was sent to a random group (approximately 5 percent) of the membership of the American Physical Therapy Association's section on Orthopedics. Of this group, only 119 individuals (23.8 percent) returned the survey. Although this return rate casts doubt on the statistical value of the study, the findings were reported. A total of 96 percent of the respondents reported that they preferred to treat patients who were unlikely to suffer from chronic benign orthopedic pain. Their attitude about patients with pain, and their level of knowledge regarding pain mechanisms were evaluated. More than 50 percent of the respondents achieved a passing mark on a test of pain knowledge, but the level of the therapists' attitude regarding treating patients with chronic pain was extremely low. All but 4% of the respondents preferred to work with patients who are not likely to have chronic pain. Seventy-two percent believed their entry-level education in pain management and theory was very inadequate or less than adequate to deal with an orthopedic patient population................
