Machismo attitude and ignorance are resulting in a steep increase in Latin American AIDS rates. Catholic intransigence on safe-sex policies and Protestant moral condemnation are slowly eroding in the face of the mounting disaster. Machismo attitude and AIDS are intrinsically linked, and the global spread of the disease will not be stopped or even slowed until the world rethinks its understanding of economic development.  The infant lay naked, alone in a large room in a Brazilian hospital. On a tag stuck to the end of her crib, in the place for her name, someone had written "AIDS and syphilis."

Homosexual relations between men were the major routes of transmission of the HIV virus in the United States and Europe during the 1980s, but there seems to have been relatively little transmission to the heterosexual population. However, epidemiologists searching for possible routes of entry of HIV into heterosexual populations have focused on the link between homosexual and bisexual and--ultimately--heterosexual relations. They have found substantial evidence of this link in Latin America and the Caribbean. For example, scientists at the Caribbean Epidemiology Center in the West Indies observed that in most of the territories in the region, AIDS cases occurred largely among homosexual and bisexual men, but as the epidemic spread, the pattern of transmission became increasingly heterosexual. Bisexual behavior enables the virus to move readily from the homosexual to the heterosexual population. In Haiti, by far the poorest country in the region, an analysis of blood samples revealed that HIV was first introduced into the country by foreign homosexuals. The Haitians who serviced this trade were largely married men or heterosexual males with girl friends who considered themselves to be heterosexual...................
