Essay on Childhood Stress (Signs, Symptoms, Causes, Effects)

Childhood Stress:Post-traumatic stress disorder was formally delineated as a psychiatric diagnostic category in 1980; however, variants of the disorder have been recognized and described in psychiatric literature since the 19th century. Whether the response to a severe stressor was called hysterical neurosis, shell shock, or traumatic syndrome, all were found to be characterized in adults by similar symptoms in three broad categories, as PTSD is at this time: reexperiencing, avoidance/numbing, and increased arousal. In formulating the diagnosis of PTSD, the stress paradigm was employed to characterize the impact of particularly extreme environmental factors, illuminating a prototypic symptomatic response in individuals with no prior history of psychiatric illness.( Briere J. (1996))

Signs: The signs of stress in child shows when the quality of children's work or his/her behavior in school declines considerably. If his/her grades start slipping or she starts getting sent to the principal often, it could be a sign that the child is really struggling emotionally. The child's personality seems to be changing in a negative way (e.g., he/she becomes sullen or snappish). Their sleeping pattern changes dramatically (he/she's sleeping longer, restlessly, or more erratically than usual); or their appetite either disappears or kicks into overdrive. The child starts having trouble getting along with others. They are no longer playing or having fun the way they used to. The child begins missing a lot of school because of stomachaches but with no fever. Each of these behaviors could be a sign of anxiety or depression that may require intervention or counseling. Even without these signs, parents should talk to their pediatrician about a possible referral if they're concerned about theie kid. "Something probably is off," says Joseph F. Hagan, M.D., chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Psychosocial Aspects of Child and Family Health................
