Essay on Nurse Retention through Mentoring
Nurse retention programs are offered by many healthcare organizations as a way of recruiting and retaining nursing staff while ensuring that existing nursing staff have the necessary expertise to work where the healthcare organization wishes to deploy them. The nurse retention program at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital started in 1998 making it one of the first such programs offered by a children's hospital in the UK. The program takes two years and involves three, eight-month placements. Nurses gain experience in areas such as surgical, medical, neonatal, assessment/ short stay, theatre, ambulatory care, high dependency, day care, A&E, child and family psychiatry, and children with learning disability.
Places on the program are offered twice yearly to newly registered nurses. Of the 113 children's nurses who have participated in the retention program since its inception, only nine have failed to complete the two-year program. Ninety three per cent of the groups are still employed within the healthcare organization. Ongoing evaluation takes place with the distribution of questionnaires at the conclusion of each cohort. Although the literature relating to preceptorship is abundant there is little published research on the ongoing retention of nurses. Nurse retention packages can be linked to both theory and practice (Anderson et al 1997) and the resulting award benefits the nurse and the clinical area. Nurses seek learning opportunities as a way of remaining motivated within their professional careers (O'Very 1999). The nurse retention pathway described by Davis (2003) suggests that the provision of high quality post-registration education is linked to high quality service provision. Such investment in nursing staff is essential if nurses are to keep up to date in the ever changing context of present day health care. A retention program through mentoring at the North Bristol NHS Trust invests in nursing nursing staff from registration through to the aspiring nurse consultant, which can take up to 15 years (Davis and Bheenuck 2003)...........................
