Lightning is one of the most stunning displays in nature. Lightning, the thunderbolt from myths, has long been feared as an atmospheric flash of paranormal origins: the immense weapon of the gods. The Greeks both wondered and feared lightning as it was thrown by Zeus. For the Vikings, lightning was formed by Thor as his hammer struck an anvil at the time as riding his chariot across the clouds. In the East, early statues of Buddha illustrate him carrying a thunderbolt with arrows at each end. Indian tribes in North America thought that lightning was because of the flashing feathers of a mystical bird whose flapping wings created the sound of thunder. At present, scientific somewhat than mystical techniques are used to elucidate lightning with experimental procedures replacing instinctive concepts.
