Non-verbal communication is to get your message across by using non-verbal cues, body language, and other unspoken messages. Such skills play an important role in relationships between people. The effectiveness of non-verbal communication thus clarifies the concept that words are not the end of all communication. There is definitely something beyond it, and works perfectly at the appropriate situations. However, there are some pointers on non-verbal communication skills.
The first and primary one is all about the “Facial Expressions” which can contradict verbal cues. There are basically two opposite aspects of this part of verbal communication. One side of it explains that when people hide their emotions, they cover it up with a poker face. On the other hand, some people exaggerate facial expressions to emphasize their feelings.
Then comes ‘Eye Contact.’ There is no better way prescribed to communicate interest in someone than eye contact. Former US President Clinton was famous for making eye contact with people and thereby making them feel important. Frequent eye contact indicates confidence and avoiding it shows insecurity.
After ‘Facial Expression’ and ‘Eye Contact,’ another non verbal skill follows up and that is, ‘Orientation.’ When facing some one while interacting with them is a sign of respect and liking. This further even makes the other person feel comfortable while correspond with the concerned person or group.
The ‘Posture’ of a person reflects the degree of tenseness and comfort he or she is in. Therefore people who maintain postures, reflecting confidence present positive images. Every person has a personal space that must be respected. This varies culturally as well as individually. “Action Language embraces all movements that are not used exclusively as signals. Such acts as walking and drinking, for example, have a dual function.” (Kees, 1956)
