Essay on Pollution from Cruise Ships
Every day a cruise ship operates, it produces 30,000 gallons of sewage and is allowed to dump treated sewage anywhere in the ocean, except in Alaska where the laws prevent such actions. It is also legal for the cruise industry to dump raw, untreated sewage in the ocean once a ship is more than three miles from the U.S. shore. This waste not only carries bacteria which are harmful to human health, but it also sickens and kills marine life including fish and corals.
Water is essential to life, and most of the world’s water is in the oceans. The earth’s population needs to protect the oceans for future generations so that we have the water to sustain life and so that we can maintain the earth’s biodiversity. However, some people do not understand that the oceans are not bottomless pits where anything and everything can be dumped. There is widespread pollution of the oceans, and a lot of this pollution comes from the cruise industry. The issue of pollution of the oceans by cruise ships is a global issue because every person on earth needs water to survive. Also, if more species become extinct because of ocean pollution, eventually species essential to human survival will also be affected. Cruise ships are responsible for more than three quarters of all ship waste and over one tenth of all illegally dumped waste. One million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles are killed annually as a result of trash found in the oceans. Although there are international regulations regulating the dumping of trash at sea, these regulations are difficult to enforce.
