It is very clear that society is unhappy with current efforts to stop illegal drug smuggling, drug use and distribution. No one in particular seems to know what should be done. With drug use and drug related crime on the rise, some people argue that current drug law is too easy on drug offenders. Society at large asks that whether the use of illegal drugs can ever be stopped. It is a question that unfortunately has no easy answer. More and more people in America feel that if this country cannot stop illegal drugs, drugs should be legalized and controlled. In my opinion too marijuana should be legalized. I strongly believe that marijuana should be legalized for medical and personal use.
Marijuana has medicinal values- No one has ever died from smoking marijuana and the use of marijuana enhances creativity. Marijuana is less dangerous than tobacco and people smoke less of it at a time (Leslie, 2002, pg. 76). No independent government panel that has studied marijuana has ever recommended jail for users. Marijuana leads to non-violence. Marijuana for medicinal use is also gaining renewed recognition. Marijuana is a medicinal herb that has hundreds of proven, valuable therapeutic uses - from stress reduction to glaucoma to asthma to cancer therapy, etc. Marijuana was a major active ingredient in a large amount of patent medicines before its ban. But does all this replace the fact that marijuana is a part of the drugs that so much loathed? Alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and morphine are all "drugs" that are "legal" in different ways. Will making marijuana as "legal" as tobacco somehow lead to making heroin as "legal" as caffeine? How would that work?
Today, even allowing marihuana to be used by patients would not be enough to make it available as a prescription.....
