Today the forces of economic globalisation are challenging the assumption. Boundaries gradually are becoming less important as large and rapidly growing flows of trade, investment, finance capital, labor and ideas create an integrated world economy. Our political institutions, however, have lagged behind. We have a global economy but not a global polity and hence our ability to govern the market and ourselves is weakened.
One of the major global economy boosts is the slave origin of several international products such as carpets, sugar and jewellery. We may be using slave made goods or investing in slavery without knowing it. Slave produced cocoa, for example, goes into the chocolate we buy. Rugs made by slave children in India, Pakistan and Nepal are mainly exported to Europe and the US. The value of global slavery is estimated at $12.3 billion per year, including a significant amount of international trade in slave-produced goods. Despite this outrage few Northern businesses or organizations are taking action.
Sugar was a lucrative trade in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries” (Web 2). The growing of Spain and Portugal's sugarcane was expanded into the Caribbean and parts of South America. While this led to an industry growing from this, it also came with some costs. One such cost was slavery. Sugar production also produced subsidiary economic activities; these included slavery, the provisioning of the sugar producers, shipping, refining, storage, and wholesale and retail trade.
