Digital music technology which is used to reproduce and distribute most of the songs and other works of music that may be widely heard or very much in demand is also relatively easy to abuse because music in the digital form can be very easily distributed without regard for copyright. Music in the digital form can be stored on a server which may be accessed through the internet and by using computer hacking techniques it is possible for an intruder to download music without paying royalties. Such piracy has forced the recording companies and copyright owners to attempt to find ways to reduce this piracy which has had a negative impact on their earnings. Digital network technologies coupled with the use of the internet has posed a fundamental challenge to music copyright because the internet makes it possible to rapidly transmit digitally coded information over vast distances in real time at near zero costs. Hence, it is possible to engage in music piracy on a scale which was not dreamt of before. Programs like Napster made the transfer of compressed digital music over slow internet connections simple and fun. MP3 made it possible to reduce the size of a high quality music file to about one Megabyte of data per minute. Napster and other similar programs made it possible to have access to music files stored on computers connected to a shared service. Even though Napster was targeted and closed by the music industry, other variants opened up and these were even more difficult to control because they did not rely on a single centralized database of songs.
