Essay on Persuasive Argument: Death Penalty
Like many other controversial issues, the issue related to the handing down of the death penalty in a society has been hotly debated with many an opinion and point of view having being presented. Although many a religious doctrine which has been influential for the development of ethics and which is based on the orthodox tradition calls for the death penalty for certain crimes such as one involving murder, however, the issues are not as clear cut in real life. There are many criminals who are involved in murders who are minors. On the other hand, there are many murders which have been committed in which the murderer acted in the most inhumane, grotesque and merciless manner towards even children who were very young and innocent. There are crimes of passion in which murder took place after the murderer had been very unfairly treated and gravely provoked.
The orthodox religious of Islam, Judaism and even old Christianity took the view that the ultimate destiny of every immortal being is death and that society at large could not be expected to carry the burden of a soul which had committed such a heinous a crime that it was cursed by God. Hence, the divine revelations asked for the soul to be returned to God for ultimate judgment and examination of the sin. It was only God who could be the fairest judge. However, with the evolution of affluent societies, the society at large was better able to cater for those who had somehow fallen from grace and had sinned. The birth of a child in a community is an occasion of joy, hope for the future and an expectation that one day the torch will be passed on to a new and younger generation which will do good works to bring.......
