Nurses through out the world always record their care using different methods. It differs from individual to individual and also is also recorded in form of uniform method of using charts and detailed description. Uses of different methods always create a misunderstanding and sometimes misreading making the hard to evaluate the care. The need therefore exist to ensure that there shall be a common language that could facilitate communication among nurses ensuring the consistency of the care. Standard Nursing Language generally includes using similar terminologies to describe different aspects of nursing. This has become more vital because of the use of electronic recording of the medical history. The SNL were developed to remove the problems of common language to be understood by all the nurses and explain the care.

The North American Nursing diagnosis Association (NANDA) worked in developing the standardized Nursing language few decades ago and the effort continues even today. The nursing intervention classifications (NIC) and Nursing Out Come classification (NOC) are the two other languages developed. The NOC is the more recent of the two [Johnson M and Maas M 1997].  These are collection of the sets and measures that classifies the nursing activities. SNL provides such terminologies that enable the nurses to convey what knowledge or the proficiency are needed in the nursing practice. In order to record the evaluation and interventions is done through the SNL. The results of the actions by the nurses can also be found through SNL.

    

Recording of the patient’s detail is generally made through charts, checklists and detailed narration.
