Taekwondo is a martial art and contains a comprehensive composition of physical activities, spiritual growth and philosophical ethics. The spirit of the taekwondo is based on the values of the two-fold ideal of harmony (Yin and Yang). The taekwondo is not based on whole religious believes but is considered to be a way of life and attitudes development methodology. Taekwondo is associated with the human’s natural instinct to defend itself. This art developed as martial art in Korea in the era of Silla, Kogoryo and Paekje kingdoms between B.C. 18 to B.C.57. These kingdoms had to maintain their survival against internal and foreign antagonism from China and Japan [History of Taekwondo]. In addition to the human enemies the disturbances were also experienced through natural calamities. This made the people of Korea put their faith in the powers of the nature such as rain, clouds, sun, moon, trees, and heaven etcetera for obtaining respite. This concept lead the people adopt a cohesive philosophical thought called “Seon” meaning flawless virtuousness.
The religious effects of Buddhism and Confucianism were so strong in the then society that the people were ready to sacrifice their lives. This also provided them the courage of no withdrawal from fighting. The loyalty to the country and to nation was the outcome of ethical thoughts that existed in the people. These spirits further developed as non-betrayal to the nation, kingdom and social obligations. This quality facilitated the youth of Silla (Hwarangdo) not only to defend their country and kingdom but also to conquer the two neighboring kingdoms converting the peninsula in to one large kingdom.
