Parish nursing is a kind of community nursing (nursing outside of a hospital setting which focuses practice on a fussy community) that focuses on the population of specific church groups and their congregations. The parish nurse focuses on the religious, affecting and physical dimensions of persons as they strive to achieve wellness and to manage their sickness. The parish nurse develops a practice in response to the distinctive requirements and priorities of a congregation and its members across the life extent. The parish nurse functions as an educator, a therapist, a referral agent and an advocate.(ANTHONY, 1999)
A parish nurse is a registered nurse who facilitates the wholistic well-being of a parishioners, thus reclaim the therapeutic ministry of the church. A parish nurse doesn't offer direct clinical care or administer medications. Originally, she conducts a needs assessment and schedules introductory activities, such as blood pressure screenings. After she gets to know the congregation members, she may take on these responsibilities:
1-Health teaching, including seminars, screenings, workshops, discussion groups, and one-to-one teaching, as of the association that naturally develops between a nurse and her patient, a parish nurse may be better able to encourage patients to make and maintain encouraging standard of living changes, such as quitting smoking.
2-Health counseling on medical, psychological, and social problems or concerns to individuals or groups
3-Teaching and organizing volunteers to help in the health ministry, such as people in the congregation who can visit the sick or lonely
4-Serving as a liaison to community resources by directing those in need to the appropriate health and social services
