In almost all the cultures men and women are treated differently. Most obvious and obvious way of treating men and women differently is in sexual division of labor, separating work into distinct specializations deemed appropriate for males and females.

The American Association of Women issued a report summarized over 1,000 studies that describe widespread classroom bias in elementary and secondary schools. Boys, for example, receive more latitude and attention while girls lose self-confidence and intellectual competitiveness (American Association of University Women; p.1). Women continue to face discrimination at the college level. They encounter chilly climate in comparison of friendlier classroom environment for male students (Crawford and MacLeod; p.120).

Women’s greater voting strength has translated into more elected female officials at the local and state levels, but, with women making up less than 20 percent of state legislature, they still do not begin to approach the level of political participation enjoyed by men.

The exclusion of females from the public spheres dates back many generations. A few women from elite families and the wives of powerful men wielded considerable informal power in advancing or hindering the career of male politicians, but formal participation was not allowed until women won the right to vote in 1920. Still, they remain marginal player for two reasons. First, largely because of historical necessity, women stress the importance of collective action through voluntary association rather than participation in individual candidates. Political institutions are still seen largely as alien territory. Second, women have chosen to concentrate mostly on “women’s issues” such as abortion, education and child care, leaving such broad matters as foreign policy and economics mostly to men (Colley; p.58).
