It surveys theories of nationalism and ethnic conflict and tests their applicability to a number of contemporary cases: the confident nationalism of Putin's Russia, the escalation of ethnic war in Sri Lanka, and the struggle to change the face of nationalism in the former Yugoslavia, to name just a few. After an examination the sources of nationalist conflict in a country, each case is then analyzed.
Understanding Ethnic Conflict
The world is currently assailed with a number of Ethnic conflicts. These conflicts are mainly prevalent in Asia, Africa and Europe. These have some roots in the different political and cultural systems of the region around the world. A number of writers maintain that globalization -- the spread of consumer values, democratic institutions, and capitalist enterprise -- exacerbate ethnic and culture violence. These societal pressures as a result promote political conflict for the reason that groups that feel endangered by globalization use force to maintain their authority or their way of life.
