Job and career changes are gradually more general due to the uncertainties of the cost-effective atmosphere, industrial changes, and new attitudes toward work. The more severe of these transitions changing careers is often associated to the developmental stage of midlife. Nevertheless, such changes are not restricted to that age group. In fact, current research and theory are moving away from age-related developmental models toward more individually determined stages. Even though "midlife crisis" is a central representation, adults practice cyclical periods of steadiness and evolution throughout life. Adult behavior is unwavering by transitions, not age. Adults are motivated to make transitions by a continual need to belong, control, master, renew, and take stock. (Allen, 1999)

A person may be at an unusual stage in each task concurrently. The clash or need of similarity between two or more of these role cycles may prompt the procedure of career change. Career change has become more communally acceptable as personal realization is more vastly esteemed. Career decision-making is seen as a series of constant choices across the life span, not a once-and-for-all event. Consequently, careers may be viewed as a spiral series of all life roles, with changes triggered by factors ranging from the anticipated (marriage, empty nest) to unanticipated (disease, divorce, suspend) to "nonevents" (a marriage or promotion that did not occur).

Additional reasons that people look for change are that their early career was not their own selection, their original aspirations were not met, there is unsatisfactory time for other life roles, or the present career is contrasting with changed values or interests.
