Introduction
In order to decrease the ethnic problems and discrimination, government has implemented affirmative action with the idea and hope that America would finally become truly equal. The basic idea behind the Affirmative action was the use of reverse discrimination to solve the problems of discrimination. In affirmative action minority groups are being given priority over other fully qualified workers. Affirmative action is one of the most emotional and explosive social issues of our time. On one side of the debate, liberals argue that preferential treatment is necessary to overcome past inequities. On the other side, conservative claim that such policy results in reverse discrimination. Surveys show that Americans are sharply divided on the issue-with women more supportive than men, and Blacks more supportive than Whites (Kravitz and Platania).

As the political debate rages, questions have been raised about the impact of affirmative action on those whom the policy is designed to help. In a series of studies, Madeline Heilman and her colleagues selected male and female college students to serve as leaders of two-person task. The students were led to believe that they were chosen for the leadership role either by a merit-selection process that was based on gender or by a merit selection process that was based on their credentials and qualifications. The women who thought they were chosen because of their sex later devalued their own performance, even after receiving positive feedback (Heilman et. al.). They also sought simple rather than demanding work assignments (Heilman et. al.) and were later less likely to recommend female job applications for an entry-level position (Heilman et. al.). This research helps to explain why female business managers who think they were hired through affirmative action are often unhappy with their work (Chacko).
