Medical technology and technology in general has advanced at a phenomenal rate in the past century, giving mankind control over many things in nature including the ability to exercise control over reproduction, prolonging life of those who will have previously died and the ability to change the characteristics of a species as a result of genetic manipulation. These capabilities that have been extended to mankind also provide a number of choices to those who want to choose and hence bring to fore ethical questions that must be answered carefully (Alexander).
The ability to control the timing for having a child and if a child should be born is also now available to a couple, who can decide not to have a baby and have an abortion instead, use birth control pills or have sterilizations. Abortions can be performed safely, without any dangerous and unsafe side effects or prolonged medical care. A number of techniques apart from the pill are also available to a couple who can have sex without having a child. The ability to choose brings about interesting questions about what life is and when it begins, should there be planned parenthood and also if a couple should be allowed to play God and destroy the life of a living child who cannot have a say because the child is not yet born (Knowledge.com).
Those who have views against abortion and Planned Parenthood also fight against all forms of contraception including the pill. Some doctors and pharmacists are using their interpretation of religious ethics to refuse to prescribe or distribute contraceptives. This is in spite of the fact that an estimated 12 million American women use hormonal contraceptives, the most popular form of birth control in the United States after sterilization.
