Essay on Theories of Juvenile Delinquency

Introduction
Juvenile delinquency refers to the tendency for criminal behavior to be found amongst the younger segments of the society and when thinking about the juvenile delinquents, attempts are made to understand the reasons that push young persons towards a tendency to commit crimes and any remedies or corrective strategy which may be applied to prevent their criminal behavior. Various theorists have been thinking about crimes, punishments and the criminal behavior along with the juvenile criminal tendencies since the 16th century in a more logical, ordered and philosophical manner. Punishments used to be meted out in the earliest history, but the level of these punishments could often be excessive and gave the impression that the offenders were required to be “eliminated” rather then “reformed” or “corrected” in the society. Hence, the burning of individuals, amputations and their stoning, crushing or wrecking certainly provided deterrence to the onlookers, but left the society destroyed as a result of the destruction of the individual in a punishment that can be thought to have been disproportional and excessive. Clearer thinking and the development of the philosophy of criminology evolved with time as crime and criminals were observed and thought about. This resulted in a better understanding of crimes as well as the measures that a society could implement in order to maintain order and protect citizens without proceeding on to the path of destruction of its human capital (Robert, 2005).

In this paper, an attempt is made to study the theories of juvenile delinquency or criminal behavior related to the adolescents and the younger members of the society. The evolution of thinking related to juvenile delinquent behavior is traced from the early classical views of the 16th century and the evolution of related thinking is considered. This is presented in different sections below.
