Introduction
Cuba is a nation which has had a strained relationship with the United States over the past few decades and a communist government. Apart from maintaining trade relations with other countries in South America, the country has attempted to foster political, trading, cultural, military as well as technological cooperation with the Soviet block countries. The United States has attempted to block sensitive exports to the nation by placing a trade embargo and in the 1990s few direct American exports were permitted into the country and there were restrictions being imposed by Cuban law as well. However, goods that are a popular part of American culture continue to be seen in Cuba, with Coca Cola having a bottling plant in the country and Pepsi Cola being purchased from Mexico along with other items. In a country where the average wage is $ 10 - 15 per month, the imported items related to the American culture are quite popular and are sold in “dollar stores” in which the government has shares. Obviously, not everyone can afford to purchase these items. Even though Cuba is a country in which the government takes care of housing, electricity, phone, health and educational needs of the citizens, most of the earnings go towards the purchase food items. Pepsi Cola does have a local company by the name of Pepsi Cola Cuba, but the beverage faces stiff competition from Coca Cola and the alcoholic beverages such as rum that are part of the Cuban culture. Pepsi is available, but it is not all that widely available with guests residing in prestigious hotels complaining that they cannot purchase the beverage, although they seem to be contented with the hard intoxicating Cuban beverages that are in plentiful supply. Foreign guests can hire a taxi for $ 20 – 30 a day..........
