The term feminist literally means “a belief in the principle that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men.” This concept is regarded as a protectionist measure by female extremists. With its emergence in to the society many a time’s women are provided a platform, from where they could voice their problems, especially issues related to violence.
In the late 19th century America was growing in the industrial sector but remained predominantly rural. Seven out of ten people in the United States lived in small towns with populations under 2500 or on farms in 1870. "Cult of Domesticity,” meant ‘Women’s God given role.’ It stated that the woman was to remain as a wife, mother, keeper of the household and must maintain moral behaviour of all those living together. But this technological advancement gave rise to providing opportunities to household women to come forward and participate in the industrial jobs. By 1860, even in the farming areas of the country white girls attended school along with the white boys, this was not prevalent before this time in the century.
By the end of the 19th century, it became evident that college-educated women did not marry as often as other women. If they married at all, they did so later in life, and consequently had fewer children. Resultantly, women’s higher education was taken as a threat because it was held responsible for destroying the traditional concept of women and family. During the 19th century the belief of feminism appeared as an alien in the society to men, but as time passed by men have accepted the norms of feminism.
