Gears are mechanical devices that convey power and motion among axes in a wide diversity of commercial and industrialized applications. Gears are exemplified by their inch-based terrain designation. Gear types existing include, spur or pinion gears, change gears, cluster gears, internal gears, differential end gears, racks, helical gears, herringbone gears, worm wheels, worms, miter or bevel gears, miter or bevel gear sets, hypoid gears, gear stock and pinion wire, and gear blank. (Darle, 1994)

Spur or pinion gears are straight-toothed; transmit power and motion between parallel axes. Change gears resemble spur gears; they are hubless with a keyway that mates with a hub for rapid changing used in machines where gear ratios are changed frequently. Cluster gears are spur gears with integral hub whose end can accept a second, hubless gear. Internal gears typically have straight teeth on ID with Circular OD; mates with spur gear on the inside. A differential end gear mates with differential assembly. A rack is a straight component with gear teeth; typically straight-toothed; mates with pinion spur gear. Helical gears are helical-toothed; they transmit power and motion between parallel axes opposite hand or right-angle axes same-hand.

In a herringbone gear each tooth comprises two opposing helices; transmit power and motion between parallel axes; may or may not have center groove. Worm wheels are driven by a worm also called Worm Gear. A worm gear is a drive gear for high ratio speed reduction between non-intersecting right-angle axes. A miter or bevel gear has a conical face; they operate on intersecting axes, which are often at right angles. A miter or bevel gear set is a matched set with defined ratios. Hypoid gears are similar to bevel gears, but driven by a worm-like drive on non-intersecting axes.
