Essay on E-Security Encryption

E-security Encryption is the art of scrambling messages to a predefined code or key, ensuring only those who know the key can read the message. For example, NJDSPTPGU is Microsoft encrypted according to a key that says replace each letter in the message with the next letter in the alphabet, or EPACSTEN is Netscape encrypted according to the even simpler key that says reverse the letters in each word. These are both easy keys to break, meaning that if I send messages using those keys and someone else want to read the message then it would not be hard to do. The first problem with E-security encryption is how to generate a code that is difficult to break. The answer is that larger keys create more complex codes and computers provide essential number-crunching machines for creating ever-larger keys. This is the source of strong and weak encryption, which is defined by the length of the key (Libicki, 1995a). The second problem with E-security encryption is how to share the key between the sender and receiver. The second revolution in encryption is the invention of public key encryption. This involves having two different keys, a private one for decrypting and a public one for encrypting. If I want to send an encoded message to someone I simply encrypt it with the public key of the recipient and they can decrypt the message with their private key. Certain mathematical procedures ensure a private key cannot be guessed from a public one, completing a system that removes the problem of transferring keys between sender and recipient (Rawlins,1996:9-21). These two answers to the long-standing problems of encryption combined with widespread use of computers have led to the appearance in the last twenty years of widespread, easily available encryption that can secure messages..............................
